TOUGH AND READY
The Scrambler represents a fresh take on the iconic bikes from Triumph’s past, adding a completely new twist to the Modern Classics range. Combining inspiration from the relaxed culture and laid back attitude of sunny California with the chic approach of Southern Europeans, the Scrambler redefines the off-road machines made famous by 60’s thrill seekers such as Steve McQueen and places many elements of their
robust, dual purpose style into a contemporary urban context.

The authentic styling of the Scrambler is what makes the motorcycle so unique, yet the technology is as modern as it can be, and for 2008 the bike receives an 865cc fuel injected engine to bring it bang up-to-date with the forthcoming Euro 3 emissions legislations. The fuel injection system is cleaner running than
the carburettor version, runs more smoothly and is easier to fire up from a cold start. The retro styling remains uncompromised as the fuel injectors have been cleverly concealed by throttle bodies designed to look like carburettors. The fuel filler cap seal has been redesigned making the cap 60% easier to open. Peak power of 60PS (59bhp) arrives at 6,800rpm, with maximum torque of 69Nm (51ft.lbf) available at 4,750rpm, and is fed to the rear wheel via a five-speed gearbox and chain final drive.

Using a strong tubular steel cradle frame and supple front and rear suspension (41mm telescopic forks and twin chromed spring preload-adjustable rear shocks) the Scrambler is built tough, to iron out the bumps. Its high, wide handlebars and high-set footpegs further aid control and low-speed manoeuvrability. The spoked wheels are sized 19 x 2.5in (front) and 17 x 3.5in (rear), both wearing lightly-knobbled tyres in sizes 100/90-19 and 130/80- 17. Twin piston calipers are used for both brakes, the front working a single 310mm disc, the rear a 255mm disc. Steering geometry is set at 27.8° of rake, with 105mm of trail and a wheelbase of 1,500mm.

Very few motorcycles can claim to be unique but the Scrambler, thanks to its authentic styling, is most certainly one of them. The flat seat, small headlight and single, round-faced speedometer mark its difference, likewise the pair of high-level exhaust pipes, each wearing an evocative heat shield.

Fittingly for such an individual machine, a whole range of Triumph Factory accessories are available for the Scrambler, all of which enhance its looks as well as adding functionality. They include a bash plate to protect the underneath of the engine, headlamp grille, number boards for the sides, tachometer, handlebar brace and a single seat and rack. For 2008 the two existing paint schemes – Roulette Green/Aluminium Silver and Tornado Red/Fusion White – are joined by Tangerine/Aluminium Silver. All three underscore its retro appeal.

The Scrambler has a distinct look, feel and personality all its own, which many of today’s riders find attractive. It offers iconic style, genuine usability and above all a great escape (pun intended…) from the humdrum of everyday.
